design drill

yayyyy! i missed you blog. how are you?
my life is so far so lovely that i dont know where to start my story.

well,
there's one big change in my life since september. i started an internship at this design agency in middle of manhattan. and... it is simply AWESOME. although this is my first actual full-time job in my life and don't have much to compare with any other places, I feel so comfortable and happy at this place:)
there are about fifteen people working at this place and most of them are under 30 years old. most of their work is digital and they all love blogging (meaning stalking design blogs every minute), which i don't complain at all. so far, my schedule has been like: go to work around 10am, start my computer, drink coffee, check all the design blogs that i've bookmarked, creative meeting, blog, work, mini blog, lunch, blog, work, blog, get links to the cool blog from other people, blog, etc... so by the end of the day, i feel like i accomplished world design tour by adding extra five blog stops for the next day. damn it.

anyways, sharing ideas and knowing what's happening around you/opposite side of you is always a good thing. and i mean it more now than when i was in school because i actually see things that surrounds and connects design to the real world now. once thing that i really love and appreciate about my work now is people who works there. they love what they do, they share what they have, and they know how to bring their work in front of people. I'm so glad that I get to work with someone that I can respect or look up to, and I feel like I'm falling in love with design again in a totally different way. yay!

oh...
and lets face it, having a "real" fire drill during work rules.

this was a picture taken from our studio, when we were still not sure if we should trust people shouting "smoke! smoke!" in front of our building. then, fire trucks came.
we had to jump off from the 5th floor because of the fire on the 2nd floor. well, not really.

...then, we all survived (thanks to the brave heroes), and we lived happily ever after that afternoon.

brooking

on sunday, september 01, sam and i went to the most intense bike ride eva. if you haven't read sam's blog before this, please do for more details.

but yes. it was my very first bike ride since i was 9 or 10 years old, and unsurprisingly, my exercise metabolism compare to then has changed dramatically in super negative way. i don't know how i'm still walking today, but i did gave myself an applause after surviving it.

so not knowing the fact until later that i can put a pin/tag on top of google map, i highlighted the route we took by using illustrator.

pink=on the way to amazing donut place
blue=the way back from amazing donut place

just for your note, there is manhattan on upper right of this map to compare the distance...

and, you know what...
i could have won that krispy kreme bike race they once did in raleigh. bummer. well, maybe i'll join next time.

here are more pictures from brooklyn bike ride. it was a lovely day.

food report

one of the good thing about ny is, everywhere you go, you find something yummster. urbanspoon application that i downloaded for my iphone... so unnecessary.

food report#1 | Billy's Bakery
super amazing cupcake shop. five minutes walk from where i work. dangerous. instead of using icing on top, they use very mild buttercream, which is my new favorite kind of sugar. double dangerous? i've been in ny for only five days now and i went there three times already. i am taking dakota and nicoco here when they visit.

food report#2 | Bombay Talkie
very modern indian restaurant. well, i say modern cause everything comes in white plates. their daily special drinks are displayed digitally above the bar. so high-tec. oh, and food are very tasty and spicy:)

food report#3 | Cafe Colonial
we went here for our first ny saturday brunch. we were planning to get just omelets from here, but as soon as monica send us fat text message saying "cheeeeese bread," we had to order one. and omg... she was so right. they have the best cheese bread eva!! and place is so cute. i have to go back.

trust me. more to come.
kalib, get excited.

starting a subway life

so i am in ny. got too excited about with my life. and kind of forgot to keep up with myself. oops (but not surprised). i finally respect graham for keeping up with his fat... i mean, his life story so consistently.

so my first day of job was the day after long drive from raleigh to here. thank you to sam, he drove all the way here by himself without falling asleep. compare to him, my job was nothing. i kept passing him bunch of snacks into his mouth (he's fat too) to keep him pumping and pretend like i was navigating by staring at the map. but i dont think i accomplished the second part that much anyways because i was keep falling asleep by looking at amazing green patterns created by trees on I-95. well, at least i had my sunglasses on. i don't think sam noticed.

the place i work is my new lover. it was my dream job and it was the very first place i applied right after i graduated from the red wolf university. i didn't hear back from them forever until the day before i was moving to ny for other design job. they asked me if i can start working on wednesday and my response was... o.m.f.g.h.e.l.l.y.e.a.!

studio is lovely. i got my own desk that came with my own phone (jingles!) and friday is a free bagel/muffin day for whole studio. yummster! there are about 30 people working there and building itself is three stories high. i've learned so much stuff in this past three days and i realized how much i didn't know about photoshop. oh design school... you are such a joker.

anyways, when i went to work on friday morning, i saw an amazingly long line in front of studio with bunch of gals with really thick layered make-ups and super annoyingly dressed guys. some were dancing to themselves, some were filming themselves/shouting, and most of them were eating mcdonalds' breakfast combo. i mean... something was definitely going on. so i looked around and i saw a flyers saying "making the band 4." apparently, my studio is next to this really big recording studio and these people who were creating this everlasting line was future talented musicians for mtv.com. oh, damn it. if i knew, i would have worn the biggest t-shirt i have and asked them to sign it. oh well, i guess i'll keep that in mind for the "making the band 5."

here is the picture of centipedes that left enormous fast food trashes behind on the street at the end of the day.

... and name donnie is so unattractive.

good morning after you fall a sleep

it is 2:30 am now. my alarm is set at 3:15 am to leave this place to go to ny and somehow, i am still awake, listening and waiting for the last roll of laundry to be done. i could have just taken my dirty clothes with me and finish washing when i moved there but the smell of cigarette from rtb was so strong that i had to do it.

so yes. sam and i get to have amazing last day dinner at rtb tonight with bunch of our lovely lovely friends... and again, we cried like little kids. of course it wasn't just crying. we ate a lot of foods, lots of talking, drinking, laughing, touching... vanwart gave us this lovely buddy called mr.ttt burger (fat...) as good bye gift/our road trip entertainer and he was already succeeding confusing many people during the dinner with his unnecessary body parts.
but yes. fun time does go fast and since we needed to finish our packing (yay! it's done!)/get some sleep (oh... still in progress...) before our long long drive, it was a hug time... meaning tears time. today, i think i was a crying robot. every time i put my arms around people, i felt so grateful that my tears came out.

i love people. they are warm and it is good thing to know.
thank you to all the sweet pips who came out tonight to give us sweetest hug ever. my eyes are super puffy because of you now.

tonight's pipster were:
studio friends: 5 +
dakota on the sf phone
sam's boyfriend: more than 10
team hereghty: 4
team wilmont: 3
team (awesome) iphoners: 6
asian: 3 + dakota on the sf phone
fat friends: 1(this is caleb) + graham on the sf phone
mustache: 1
mr.ttt burger: 1

well, seems like my laundry stopped making noise.
i guess it is time.

oh, no worries. road trip will be so fine. we got honda minivan odyssey 2008. don't get jealous.
